Sea Traffic and Environmental Protection in the Mediterranean
The environmental degradation of the Mediterranean area is already severe and is worsening by the day in many parts, including Northern Adriatic coastal zone. Besides the others, the traffic growth is a principal cause of environmental degradation, especially when it is accompanied by inadequate environmental policies. The volume of the trade in the Mediterranean region has increased considerably over the years and far more goods are now been transported through the Mediterranean Sea than ever before. Sustainable development strategy and integrated coastal area mangement give the answers to the many questions in this context. Sustainable development requires that the quantity and quality of resources are to be safeguarded in order to satisfy not only the present needs, but to provide a sustained yield of economic and environmental services for future generations as well.
