The Pakoštane shipwreck (Croatia: A preliminary report)
The work carried out in 2007 on the Roman wreck of Pakoštane has achieved all the goals previously established. Thanks to the collaboration between the Department of Underwater Archaeology of the Croatian Conservation Institute, the University of Zadar, the Centre Camille Jullian and the Association Arkaeos, with the support of the Municipality of Pakoštane, substantial progress has been made in studying and protecting the underwater archaeological site. The wreck of Pakoštane is the first ancient ship discovered in Croatian waters whose remains were subject to a complete study based on the principles of nautical archaeology. It was an excellent opportunity for practical and theoretical education as well as the training of the Croatian team of archaeologists in the methods of recording and studying of ancient shipwrecks. As the hull of Pakoštane shipwreck has been partly uncovered, the excavation of the site has to be continued during the following years in order to complete the documentation and to produce a comprehensive study of the hull remains.
