Root canal treatment protocols, materials and attitudes employed in endodontic treatment by dentists in Croatia

Aimwas to investigate utilisation of treatment protocols, selection of materials during endodontic treatment by Croatian dentists as well as their attitudes towards endodontic treatment. Eighteen questions questionnaire was used in the study. Questions covered general information about practice setting, usage of radiographs, rubber dam and apex locator, irrigation solution selection, rotary endodontics usage and attitudes, intracanal medicaments and root canal filling materials. Number of participants was 300. Reply rate was 31.3% (N=94). Majority of offices was situated in urban area (77.7%) and daily endodontic treatment frequency exceeded 3 per day in 74.5% offices. Radiographs were taken before and after treatment in 43.6%, while 20% of dentists required radiographs only in case of complications. Rubber dam was seldom used (9% of regular users). Its usage positively correlates with frequency of radiograph analysis (Spearman’s rho, p<0.05). Rubber dam non-users considered it to be too expensive (30.8%) but they also lacked training (50.8%). NaOCl was the most commonly used irrigation solution (90.4%) while usage of hydrogen peroxide significantly decreased with age (X2 test, p<0.05). Apex locator was used by 66% of dentists and it positively correlates with radiograph analysis frequency (Spearman’s rho, p<0.05). Finger instruments were preferred over rotary files. Major obstructions in usage of rotary files were price and lack of training. Also, usage of rotary files negatively correlates with age (Spearman’s rho, p<0.05). Calcium hydroxide dressing was preferred (62%), but Chlumsky solution is still used (26.8%). Dominant root canal filling material combination is gutta-percha and AH plus (91.5%). Despite the majority of urban offices and high endodontic treatment requirements, radiograph analysis importance is underestimated. Rubber dam as a vital part of treatment protocol is even less utilized. Efforts should be put into education and training in usage of rubber dam, apex locators, rotary endodontics and irrigation solution importance.
