Dugouts of Croatia
Dugouts in the Croatian area, similar to other parts of Europe, have long stayed in usage and have therefore been transferred from domain of archeological to ethnological heritage. They are reflections of a tradition, dating from prehistoric periods to modern times. Although the continual usage of dugouts cannot definitely be confirmed, it is sure that with the arrival of the Slavs this tradition has gained new boost and continued almost to the present days. The interesting fact is that it encompassed all water surfaces, including the Adriatic coast, where dugouts less than a hundred years ago used to thread the distance between the land and numerous East Adriatic islands. This paper represents the first attempt at unifying the basic data on Croatian dugouts. The next step would be their comparison to other European finds, with the aim of noting similarities and differences which could contribute to their more detailed interpretation.
