The Amphora's Toe. Its Origin and Function

While significant advances have been made in the typological study of amphorae over the past few decades, little has been discussed and considered about the causes for the emergence of this specific vessel shape, designed primarily for the maritime transportation of goods, as well as its lengthy survival in practical use. Most of the current definitions describe the characteristic pointed end at the bottom of amphorae merely as a convenience for storing them in warehouses on land or below ship-decks and for gripping or handling individual vessels. Only in the case of the oldest examples, the well-known Canaanite jars, do authors refer to their strength, which was enhanced by such a shape. Scientific confirmation of the significance of amphora shapes for their strength has been obtained in the Shipbuilding and Marine Technology Institute of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture in Zagreb, by applying computer-aided modeling in the SESAM program and using the finite element method.
