Vibration suppression of a flexible rotor using active magnetic bearings (AMB)
In this paper the procedure of the vibration suppression of a flexible rotor supported by active magnetic bearings is presented. The purpose of the research is to establish stable rotor operation while passing the first critical speed. In order to create an efficient control algorithm, initially the model is reduced using the modal decomposition method. Afterwards, the reduced finite element model of the rotor is imported into the Matlab environment, where the AMB system control is designed by applying extensive rotordynamic synthesis, eigenvalue and mode shape analysis as well as frequency and time response studies. The rotor system model considers AMB sensor-actuator non-collocation. The results of this research show that minimal correction in the AMB position and the orientation could provide great improvement in AMB tunability and overall system stability.
