Conservative Therapy of Urolithiasis on the Territory of Croatia- A model of Interrelation of Daily Experience and Science 16- 18th Century

The interrelation of daily experience and science from 16th to 18th century was analysed on the model of conservative approach to the treatment of urolithiasis in the territory of Croatia. Sources taken into consideration were: 1. Curationum medicinalium Centuriae septem (Venice 1552) written in Latin by Amatus Lusitanus (1511-1568). This paper focuses on the VI. Centuria compiled during his practice in Dubrovnik (1556-1558). 2. The prayerbook of the Franciscan Ivan Čeperić of 1745 written on the island of Krk in Glagolitic script and old Croatian and Italian language. In spite of sharp differences and the time interval of almost two centuries between them, many resemblances in these sources were found. The volume of knowledge increased through centuries, but the main paradigm toward healing urolithiasis remained the same until the 19th century. Thus similar conservative approach was identified as part of learned (scientific) as well as monastic medical practice. Less was known how they were connected and what they have in common. Common elements identified by the comparison of 16th century official medical treatment and an 18th century unofficial (monasterial, vernacular) source are representative for global approach to therapy of urolithiasis in the analysed period.
