Reducing warm bias over subarctic regions in RegCM4
Large warm bias during winter is detected in simulations with RegCM4 over subarctic regions. Similar error is present in several other regional and global climate models. The modifications to reduce warm bias in RegCM4 included the reductions of low-level cloud cover fraction and minimum turbulent mixing in stable planetary boundary layer. The reductions are spatially confined and located at the lower tropospheric levels and do not degrade model’s results in other locations and seasons. The impacts of new land-surface scheme and new PBL scheme are assessed.
