Organizing a Doctoral Research Project in the Field of Engineering Management as an International Collaborative Network
Motivated by a number of recent discussions that question the traditional concept of organizing a Ph.D., this discussion attempts to identify and mutually compare different organizational paradigms of a doctoral research project. By using organizational science a theoretical lens, this essay distinguishes between two organization modes of research: the centralized model where research is conducted under the auspices of one institution and academic supervisor and the collaborative networking model that integrates different perspectives between multiple academic and industrial organizations. The essay concludes with providing practical recommendations for managing the doctoral project as a decentralized and collaborative undertaking.
