A Particle Shape Library for Combined Finite- Discrete Element Simulations of Granular Media
The combined finite-discrete element method has become a simulation tool of choice for a diverse field of industrial applications including mineral processing, powders, mining and rock mechanics. Particle shapes play an important role these and many other problems of industrial relevance. It has been well demonstrated in recent years that particle shapes play an important role in problems of mechanics of discontinua in general. Numerical simulations have therefore started including shapes such as ellipses, assemblies of spheres, super-quadrics, etc ; some simulations have gone as far as introducing real shapes. In this work a particle shape library suitable for direct inclusion into the combined finite-discrete element simulations is presented in both 2D and 3D. In a sense, the developed library represents a finite dimensional approximation of the so called vector space of particle shapes.
