Nanosilver in the glass of water - a comprehensive identification of disinfection by-products and assessment of mutagenicity of disinfected drinking water in the presence of nanosilver

Drinking water disinfectant and disinfection by-products (DBPs) have been linked to human health effects. Concurrently, the widespread use of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) in commercial products (i.e. food storage containers, coating materials, detergents, fabrics and clothing, sporting goods, dietary supplements, cleaning and personal care products, cosmetics, and medical appliances) will likely result in an unknown spread of Ag into the environment. However, no studies provided information on a possible influence of the presence of Ag-NPs on drinking water disinfection processes. We performed a comprehensive identification of DBPs formed when chlorine, ozone, and chlorine dioxide were applied as disinfectants for drinking water from three different regions of Croatia with or without addition of nanosilver particles. We measured also genotoxicity directly in treated water using Comet test. The results are preliminary, but could provide a basis for further studies evaluating the environmental impact of Ag-NPs in natural aquatic systems.
