Causes and Consequences of Fatigue on Board
Abstract Fatigue is one of the most dangerous occurrences on board. It causes the erroneous judgments, mismanagements and reckless actions. Therefore, the consequences of fatigue are a danger to the ship, crew and environment. Fatigue often occurs due to improper work organization on board, and specific marine environment with frequent noise, vibrations, ship’s rolling, change of weather and climate zones, etc. This occurs due to excess in overtime working hours and reduced hours of rest and sleep. By importing cheap crews from the Far East, and registration of vessels under flags of convenience, shipping companies often circumvent the provisions of the ITF and the ILO. Records of overtime working hours are very difficult to monitor. In this paper, the authors analyse the causes and consequences of fatigue, the problem of manipulation of overtime work, and suggest possible solutions.
