Modernist Reconstruction and Annex Addition of Historicist Building Gavella – Herzog in the Centre of Zagreb, Croatia (1928-1931)

In the center of Zagreb, Croatia, at Ban Josip Jelačić Square existing historicist building Gavella of architect Kuno Waidmann was reconstructed due to enlargement of building to the north after the dislocation of Medveščak stream at the end of XIXth century, and regulation of new street Pod zidom after the demolishment of southern walls of town of Kaptol, with new Dolac market regulation. The project is signed by architect Ignjat Fischer and attributed as well to architect Zoja Nepenina Dumengjić. The annex of residential-business building Gavella-Herzog, Pod zidom 6, is early modern architecture work in the very centre of Zagreb 1928-1931, close to Peter Behrens façade purification of secession Elsa Fluid Building at Jelacic square realised in 1928. The intervention on Gavella-Herzog building interpolated the Harmica passage which connects main square at the south and northern market square of Dolac, new double winding staircase of dynamic sculptural expression upraising public area to the building following levels, and north façade that articulates neglected eastern stair-approach to Dolac. This solution manifested innovative integration of urbanistic, functional and design parameters which outgrow primary function and enrich the space, not only the building interior but also the public town space of the Zagreb very centre.
