Statistical Analysis of the Strength of Wood Finger Joints
Wood today is one of the most widely used natural materials. New construction solutions are therefore being looked for so as to rationalise the production of wood elements and thus contribute to the preservation of woods. One such rationalisation is the longitudinal jointing of smaller wooden elements by means of finger joints. This paper presents the results of the research into physical and mechanical properties of glued finger joints made of beech (Fagus silvatica, L.). The paper describes a test run on four groups of samples (with finger lengths of 7.5 and 10 mm, and lateral and planar position of fingers relative to the action of force) statically loaded. The breakage force, the deflection, moisture content, density of wood was measured and the modulus of elasticity was determined. The results of the analysis have shown that joints with 7.5 mm long fingers has a higher bending strength then joints with 10 mm long fingers. The modulus of elasticity of all four groups of samples with both lateral and planar position of finger relative to the action of force showed no significant difference.
