Prolactin response to thyroliberin stimulation in diabetic pregnant women
The pituitary prolactin reserve was investigated in 10 diabetic pregnant women by using 0.2 mg thyroliberin at the end of three trimesters of pregnancy, measuring prolactin levels in basal conditions, 20 and 60 minutes after TRH application. The prolactin values were compared to the values detected in 39 healthy pregnant women under the same conditions. The results of this investigation indicated that in the first trimester of pregnancy there was no significant difference in basal levels and pituitary prolactin reserve between the diabetic and healthy pregnant women. In the second and third trimester of pregnancy significantly decreased values of prolactin and prolactin pituitary reserve were found in diabetic pregnants. Three out of 10 diabetic pregnancies ended with preterm delivery, while all healthy pregnant women delivered at term. It has been concluded that a decreased pituitary prolactin reserve could indicate a higher risk during pregnancy in diabetic pregnant women.
