Proteomics - Veterinomics – a ”new" medical concepts
Proteomics as a relatively new, post-genomic scientific and methodological approach has already approved itself in a wide range of medical researches. Due to the genome sequencing project a great number of genes were described and fully annotated. This enabled the next step toward protein sequencing and identification that will improve the characterization, clinical management and treatment of human and/or animal diseases of wide range. Proteomics represent the large-scale study of protein expression, protein-protein interactions or their post-translational modifications. In this matter veterinomics would represent survey of the proteins expressed in any animal cells, organs, tissues and fluids (plasma, serum, liquor) which are considered to play a major role in a various medical conditions (e.g.physiology, pathology, diseases, tumors). Proteomic strategies employ a combination of efficient and high-throughput separation technologies, high resolution mass spectrometry and powerful bioinformatic tools to characterize and quantify proteins from different biological samples. Proteins that are qualitatively or quantitatively significantly altered in certain disease or pathological state can be compared with a group of healthy individuals and in this matter represent targets for new diagnostic tests, new therapies, or even discoveries of new biomarkers. The advancement of the proteomic technologies has added new dimensions to the analyses of clinically relevant samples and promises to enhance the way diseases will be managed in the future. In this presentation we will briefly introduce the applicability of proteomic tools at the large scale for the different aspects of veterinary medicine or veterinomics.
