Novel Method of Availability Calculation Based on Realistic Path Protected Network Scenarios

The paper presents a new availability model and method of calculating the availability of optical fibre transmission network, which include weighting factors. Weighting factors are defined and classified on the basis of behaviour analysis of the actual fibre optic network in the event of failures. The aim of this paper is to achieve a realistic basis for further academic research by combining field data with the previous studies on the resilience of fibre optic networks. The results of several case studies availabil¬ity calculation are presented and analyzed here. The obtained results are comparable with statistical data on interrup¬tions in the real backbone network and simulation results for idealized network cases with implementation of path protection.
