Evaluation of liming and extraction method impact on exchangeable cations determination

The objective of this paper is to compare the results of two exchangeable cations extraction methods on acid soils in order to evaluate the liming influence and extraction efficiency of exchangeable cations. Soil samples from two liming experiments were studied. The first liming experiment (2004) was sat up in the spring of 2004 in continental part of Croatia on extremely acid soil. Liming was conducted with 10 tha-1 of dolomite material (24, 0 % CaO and 16 % MgO). Another liming experiment (2007) was sat up on extremely acid soil in continental part of Croatia in the autumn of 2007. Liming was conducted in the following treatments: control, 5 tha-1, 10 tha-1, 20 tha- 1, 30 tha-1, 40 tha-1 of dolomite. Lime application significantly increased exchangeable Ca and Mg concentrations in both extractants. Two experiments, showed statistically higher concentrations of exchangeable Mg and K in acid solution (AAEDTA extraction method) compared to neutral solution (AA extraction method). But AA extractant resulted with significantly higher exchangeable Ca concentration on experiment 2004. Comparison of two extraction methods conducted on both liming experiments indicated that higher values were obtained by AAEDTA method. The analysis resulted with significant correlation between exchangeable Ca, Mg and K extracted by AA and AAEDTA solutions. The highest level of extractants agreement was obtained for exchangeable K, followed Mg, then excahngeable Ca. CEC values depended on exchangeable cations extracted from the soil samples from both experiments and the observed relationship was very close to regression analysis for the individual exchange cations.
