Fruit quality of soilless grown tomato

Since the plants grown in soilless culture are optimally supplied with water and nutrients, their fruits have good quality. The aim of this study was to determine the qualitative properties of four tomato cultivars grown on rockwool. Qualitative properties (dry matter and soluble solids content, pH, total acidity and ascorbic acid content) and mineral status were determined periodically, three times during the harvest period. Samples for analysis were consisted from six fruits with uniform size and maturity. Depending on the cultivar and sampling date dry matter content varied from 4.96 to 6.05 %, while the soluble solids content was between 4.31 and 5.28 °Brix. During the harvest period pH-value of fruits was increasing in all cultivars while total acidity varied dependent on cultivar. The lowest ascorbic acid content was determined at the first sampling date and there were no significant differences between cultivars. Significant differences in the vitamin C amount among the tested cultivars were determined at the second and the third sampling date, when the content varied from 11.69 to 13.97 and from 13.38 to 18.86 mg 100 g-1 fresh weight, respectively. Total nitrogen ranged from 1.89 to 2.85, phosphorus from 1.25 to 1.94 and potassium from 2.72 to 4.22 % dry matter. The highest dry matter and soluble solids content were determined in 'Fado' and 'Mondial' fruits while the fruits of 'Belle' and 'Mondial' had the highest amount of vitamin C. 'Mondial' fruits had also the highest content of determined minerals.
