Comparative analysis of basic procedures for shafting alignment calculation
Shafting alignment procedure is very important for safe and reliable operation of ship propulsion system and consequently for ship safety. It includes calculations, installation and testing, as well as possible readjusting to ensure appropriate loading of all bearings and no excessive bending in shaft sections. Three Moment Equation Method (TMEM), Finite Element Method (FEM) as well as Transfer Matrix Method have been compared within the numerical example which includes shaft line of a new generation oil tanker. Firstly, some general remarks on shafting alignment procedures and their importance in proper operation of a ship are given. Further on, ship main particulars and basic characteristics of shaft line are described, and their description is followed by outline of TMEM and FEM, adjusted for this particular case. The results obtained by both methods are compared to those obtained in the shipyard, which are based on application of Transfer Matrix Method. Finally, some improvements of shafting alignment procedure have been proposed.
