Influence of the secular trend on development of third molars from year 1977 till 2007

Aim: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influance of the secular trend on development of third molars from year 1977. till 2009. Materials and methods: The study was carried out on 1200 panoramic radiographs of children aged from 6 to 17 years. In the first group (group A) - 600 (300 boys and 300 girls) panoramic radiographs were taken from year 1977. till 1979., and in the second group (group B)- 600 (300 boys and 300 girls) panoramic radiographs were taken from year 2007. till 2009. The dental age was determined according to Demirjian's method. Results: The presence of third molars in all segments was statistically greater in group of children from year 2007. till 2009. (group B) (p<0, 001). All four analyzed third molars were statistically significant in B stage of mineralization in group B of children (p<0, 001). Conclusions: Our study showed that secular trend had positive influence on development of third molars. It is the implement of knowledges showed by other authors about the presences of secular trend of growth in orofacial region.
