Opskrba hranom u rimskom legijskom logoru u Burnumu - analiza amfora
Very efficient supply system of the Roman army developed from the Augustan period onwards, functioning on three levels: state, provincial and local army level. In Burnum, which was a station for several legionary and auxiliary military units, there are archaeological confirmations of food supply from the legionary territory and overseas sources out of the province, though supply on provincial, Dalmatian level should not be in question considering the natural predispositions. Two boundary inscriptions with a mention of the prata legionis indicate the character of local self-supply. Geographical determinants of the legionary territory and certain archaeological and osteological finds (fish hooks, hunting arrows, bones of domesticated and wild animals etc) indicate that primarily cattle-raising could develop in this region, and agriculture, hunting and fishing were less important. Supply from sources out of the province is attested principally by numerous finds of amphorae. Diagnostic material of almost 300 amphora fragments discovered in the layers from the first half of the first century at the amphitheater area indicates which food products were delivered to the army in Burnum, in what amounts and where from. Analysis of the amphorae reveals that wine was imported most frequently, then olive oil, fish products and finally fruits, which is in accordance with our knowledge of nutritional needs and eating habits of the Roman army. The greatest amount of products was imported from the Aegean region, then northern Italy, Istria, southern Hispania, southern Italy, eastern Mediterranean and southern Gaul. These were leading production areas of the time, products of which were exported across the Empire, pointing to all complexity of army logistics, but also showing the attractivity and importance of the Roman army in the development and maintenance of global Roman economy and trade in which Burnum appears as an important destination.
