Process Modelling of Core Handling and Measurement Procedures Using UML Activity Diagram
The laboratory core handling process is a demanding process that leads to different measured data. Using interpretation, measured data are converted to information that is significant for the overall exploration, development and production of oil and gas. Core information value depends on the quality of the obtained measurement data, the teamwork of professionals involved and the time taken to obtain the data from the core. The process of core handling begins upon the receipt of the core in laboratory. The first activities are core screening and core preparation for measurements followed by core description and basic core data definition. Subsequently, a series of analyses and measurements on the full core diameter are carried out resulting in different geological and petrophysical data. After these measurements have been taken, various smaller samples are taken from the core. The shape and size of the samples are adjusted to the needs of specific analyses and measurements. The core handling process ends with the storage of core remnants and different smaller core samples followed by archiving the data that represent the results of the analyses and measurements. The core handling process carried out in petroleum geology laboratories can be defined as a complete cycle of business processes. The process model can be used to describe activities that take place in a certain order. Core handling process is represented using a graphical method and the use of an UML (Unified Modelling Language) activity diagram. The Unified Modelling Language is a visual, object-oriented, and multi-purpose modelling language. The presented process model shows the order of performance of analyses and measurements on the core and smaller core samples drilled from the core. The graphically described model represents an efficient means of communication since the process involves experts from different fields.
