New fibers in biocomposites
After a long break, Spanish Broom gained our interest as a natural, sustainable and renewable fibre for textile and technical applications. This paper describes the characterization of Spanish Broom fibres (lat. Spartium Junceum) obtained by different methods of maceration. Some of the most significant chemical and physical properties of Spanish Broom fibers are reported. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) has proven to be a useful tool for determination of morphological characteristics of elementary and technical fibres. Other physico-chemical properties of fibers were determined by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and tensile strength. One of the possibilities of using Spanish Broom fibers, in accordance with the obtained results, would be for biocomposites, especially used for technical textile.
