Stems and concepts through language systems and time (love, hatred, desire, will and abomination)
On the basis of primarily semantic comparison of the lexems derived from Psl. *ljub-, *hotê-/hъtê-, *volê-, *želê-, *nenavid-, *mьrz-, the structural differences are identified between Croatian Church Slavonic and Croatian lexicalization of two pairs of concepts closely associated in the context of the Christian medieval notion of passions (Aquinas’s Summa theologiae Ia.IIae.22-48): love and desire, hatred and abomination. The contribution aims to show the help that etymology can offer in tracking lexicological and semantic similarities and differences of close idioms.
love; desire; will; hatred; abomination; diglossia; Croatian Church Slavonic
