Assessment of Suitability of Agricultural Soils in Croatia for Agricultural Production of Plants Based on the Results of European EuroGeoSurveys Project "GEMAS"

Results of the EuroGeoSurveys project „Geochemical Mapping of Agricultural and Grazing Land Soils – GEMAS“ were employed with the purpose of displaying the spatial distribution of the potentially toxic elements in the agricultural soils on the territory of the Republic of Croatia. The analyzed set contains all ten harmful elements in soil defined by the pollution-control laws and regulations (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mo, Ni, Pb i Zn). The geogenic origin of two elements (Pb and Cr) was effectively deduced relating the spatial distribution of these two elements with the underlying bedrock (parent rocks). Regional geochemical mapping is recommended before legal regulation of the level of admissible concentration of noxious substances in soils concerning not only the regolith but also the parent rocks. Assessment of geochemical regional trends of Possibly Harmful Elements and Species (PHES) in soils over various types of bedrock is also highly recommended.
