Report on the Workshop on Transposition and Implementation of Racial Directive

The first thematic workshop dealt with the transposition and implementation of the Racial Equality Directive into national legislation. In the introductory part of the workshop, Mr Dezideriu Gergely explained the Romanian experience in fulfilling the accession criteria, and Ms Ulrike Salinger gave an overview of the implementation of the Racial Equality Directive into the Austrian legislation. In the second part of the workshop, the participants had an opportunity to exchange their experiences. Several issues were raised, such as: the motivation of national legislators to modify the national anti-discrimination legislation ; obstacles in the implementation of the Racial Equality Directive into national legislations ; and the question whether the support for persons discriminated against in Austria and Romania is effective.
