Magnetic anisotropy of low-dimensional CuSeO3
We present the first study of magnetism of monoclinic CuSeO3. At high temperatures the system is paramagnetic and at Tmax = 17 K the susceptibility has a maximum suggesting a low dimensional underlying magnetic lattice. From consideration of possible Cu-O-Cu paths, we propose a magnetic lattice of spin tetramers. At TN=8 K the system undergoes a phase transition to long range AFM order. The spin axis direction in the ordered state is determined. Angular dependence of torque was measured in both the PM and the AFM state. A large rotation of the magnetic axes confined to the ac plane in the PM phase was detected from torque and confirmed by ESR measurements. The temperature dependence of susceptibility anisotropy suggest possible presence of anisotropic exchange. Both symmetric and antisymmetric anisotropic exchange (Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction) are possible in this system. To determine which is present/dominant, microscopic techniques such as ESR and NMR need to be employed. Some effort in that direction concerning ESR has already been made. The NMR measurements are planned in the near future.
