Ethics and Poetry. An "Ancient Quarrel" in Greek Philosophy and its Modern Reception
In this presentation I will explore the relationship between ethics and only one genre of literature - poetry. I will summarize the thought of M. Nussbaum, who believes that poetry can also provide substantial assistance in responding to this ancient but nevertheless universal question of humanity: how one should live. Through the example of the poet Czesław Miłosz I will illustrate previous observations on the relationship between ethics and poetry, and discuss whether it is possible through poetic form to answer this important existential question and what are the elements and the ways that could make poetry a means of transmitting the ethical message.
