Female Players: Vernacular Theories about Body, Gender and Music in Croatia
The author discusses historical and contemporary sources on female players in Croatia. The reasons for them being confirmed or concealed by ethno/musicological discourses are analyzed. There exist(ed) broader social footholds supporting (and also restricting) their presence in public practice. They appear as family members, Croatian Women, emancipated women, custodians (saviors and revivers) of local traditions, members of the fairer sex, jocular replacements, shameless women, and as mannish women.
