Fatigue reliability analysis of orthotropic steel deck

Orthotropic steel decks are widely used in bridge decks structure of highway bridges. The results of inspection of orthotropic steel decks show that their fatigue life can be shorter than the one of other elements. According to some research as early as after 25 to 30 years, damage in the form of cracks can be seen in some of the details categories. Investigations and inspections of bridges have shown almost twice as much fatigue damage in closed than in opened stringer. This is why probabilistic fatigue analysis of different types and geometry of orthotropic steel decks with closed stringer was conducted. On numerical finite element models of orthotropic steel decks simulations of vehicle wheel passing (fatigue load model from EN 1991-2) were performed to determine the stress-range spectrum in the observed details. The fatigue strength curves for different detail categories of orthotropic decks are given in EN 1993-1-9 and when the standardised assessment of fatigue is conducted the question of a reliability level arises. The paper presents forming of the fatigue limit state function. Based on the solution of this function reliability indices are calculated for different detail categories and for different time of bridge exploitation. The contribution of this paper consists in the comparison of the calculated reliability indices with the target values of reliability indices according to EN 1990. This comparison may lead to refined differentiation of reliability levels than are now stated in the norm. The choice of too high target values can cause economic and social problems since most bridges will not comply with the required values. This paper can be a basis for initiating discussions on extending the future generation of norms for structures.
