Shear diaphragm design methods - Reliability analysis

Properly fastened profiled steel sheeting can be of great benefit to the stiffness and strength of panels which are subject to in-plane or shear displacements. Such panels are called shear diaphragms or simply diaphragms. The existing verification of shear diaphragms is based on two generally accepted design methods. On one side there is theory proposed by Schardt/Strehl, which has been used in DIN 18807. It gives design expressions for evaluating the shear stiffness of trapezoidal steel sheets laid with a specific fastening pattern. On the other side there is the theory of Bryan/Davies, which was recommended by the ECCS and gives design expressions for evaluating the shear strength and the shear stiffness of diaphragms. Further, in EN 1993-1-3: 2006, not one design method is explicitly recommended. Since the European standards were accepted at the national level there is a need to develop technical proposals that will be used as a basis for the future generation of Eurocodes. EN 1990 gives recommendations for reliability indices, however, the possibility of their application in the shear diaphragm verification has not been elaborated. The proposed concept in this paper enables the evaluation of the reliability level of each method and the implementation of the objective mutual comparison.
