Long-term Care for Older People in Croatia
The Republic of Croatia faces an ageing society, a trend that becomes most evident in low birth-rates and the growing proportion of the elderly in the population.Long term care is not established as a distinctive welfare sector in Croatia. The core provisions are organised in the context of social welfare, a system following social assistance principles. From 2001, the social welfare system that defines long-term care provisions has seen important and ongoing reforms. While the challenges of an ageing society are widely recognised in Croatia and while the social welfare system has seen many important reform steps in the past decade, a broader public debate on the implementation of a comprehensive and integrated long-term care system has not yet begun in Croatia.
