Hard turning experimental investigation of surface roughness with PCBN tools

Hard machining by turning instead of grinding is opening up economical advantages and flexibility in many applications e.g. when machining chilled cast iron or hardened steels. The grinding operation is either substituted completely by turning ”turning instead of grinding“ or at least the costly coarse grinding can be replaced ”turning before grinding“. For that reasons, this paper presents implementation of hard turning technology in real industrial environment for diesel engines components production. The main objective of that investigation was one aspect of surface integrity valorized through micro geometry of hardened steel machined surface i.e. surface roughness parameters according to technology requirement. In order to achieve that, it has been carried out experimental research based on factorial design of experiment. The cutting parameters influences: cutting speed, feed and depth of cut, combined with geometry of PCBN tools have been investigated with target to reduce the production cost and achieve desired product quality by hard turning process of AISI 4142 instead of grinding. Obtained prediction models established the correlation between cutting parameters and surface roughness has been also presented in this paper.
