Accent paradigms of a-stem nouns in the Neo- Štokavian dialect of Bitelić

Bitelić is a village near Sinj, Croatia. It is situated on the South-West side of the mountain Dinara, near the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its dialect shows features of a larger group of Neo-Štokavian Ikavian dialects (*ě > i, eg. stína 'rock' ; *ъ, *ь > a, eg. dàska 'plank' ; *t' > ć svíća 'candle', *d' > đ mȅđa 'border', Neo-Štokavian accentuation etc.), but also some more commonly found in Neo-Štokavian Ijekavian (vowel alternations in unstressed syllable, eg. gȕšterica/gȕštarica 'lizard') and Čakavian dialects (*ę > a after j, č, ž jamit 'steal'). The paper offers a grammatical description of the dialect of Bitelić, which focuses on accentology, i.e. paradigms of a-stem nouns, most of which are of feminine gender, except certain lexemes and male names as Jérko, genitive Jérkē. A-stem nouns also show morphological (eg. suffix -an in dative, locative and instrumental plural, ovcan 'sheep') and syntactic specifics (eg. pȋtāj žènē 'ask a woman', where the object is in genitive, and not accusative case **pȋtāj žènu). Paradigms are analysed both synchornically and diachronically, with regards to word-formation models and nouns that have changed paradigms in time.
