How to Facilitate the Diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome is a functional bowel disorder in which abdominal pain is associated with defecation or a change in the bowel habit, and manifests with disordered defecation and distention. Symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome mimic many organic diseases and can mislead to a wrong diagnosis. On the other hand, irritable bowel syndrome is very common, and when it is not recognized as a functional disorder, unnecessary expensive and invasive diagnostic procedures are performed. The recommended diagnostic algorithm includes query with symptom -based criteria and a variety of tests graded from simple to subspecialist issues. It is intended to help both general practice and specialists.
