Irritable Bowel syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome is one of the most common gastrointestinal diseases characterized by the symptoms of abdominal pain with diarrhea and/or constipation. The symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome are chronic or recurrent during the time of great stress and emotional tension. Proper understanding of the disease is based on the fact that there are no structural or biochemical abnormalities of the intestine. The changes include functional disturbances in intestinal motility and visceral sensitivity strongly connected with the physiological background of the person. Practical approach to the diagnosis utilizes the symptom-based Rome or Manning criteria, exclusion of organic disease, and institution of a therapeutic protocol. Individualized treatment includes an integrated psychological, dietary and pharmacologic approach set according to the predominant symptom type, severity of symptoms, and grade of patient's disability.
