SEISMIC RESPONSE OF CONCRETE ARCH BRIDGES TO MULTIPLE-SUPPORT EXCITATION
This paper describes seismic analysis of deck-type concrete arch bridges to spatially varying ground motion, which includes effects of the seismic wave passage and the loss of coherence. Seismic analyses are performed on bridges of similar layout but different spans by time-history method, using ground motions generated by the conditional simulation method. Influences of wave passage and incoherence are evaluated separately and the case when both phenomena are present is additionally considered. Results of the longitudinal response analysis show that spatial variability of ground motion should be taken into account for seismic design of long span arch bridges even though it is not commonly done in engineering practice. It may be seen that phase shifts are generally more unfavorable than coherency-loss effects for long span bridges, but neither of the effects can be neglected.
