Complications in colorectal surgery ; comparation between laparoscopic and open surgery:a single surgeon experience
Here we report our 5-year results comparing complications in open and laparoscopic colorectal resections done by a single surgeon.137 pts were entered in our computer database: 68 laparoscopic and 69 open surgeries were performed. 9 laparoscopic procedures converted to open surgery. No intraoperative complications during open surgery were detected. Postoperative complications were lower in laparoscopically operated pts. Postoperative comlications occured in 15 patients ; 9 were submitted to open and 6 to laparoscopic surgery. Eight pts had wound infection ; 5 of them underwent open surgery. Anastomotic leak occured in 4 pts, all after low rectal resection. Of these 3 resections were performed laparoscopically. Other complications included ileus and small bowel obstruction in 3 pts operated by open technique. Hospital stay for pts with complications was longer (8-71 days). Laparoscopic surgery showed more intraoperative complications ; but overall postoperative complications occured more in open surgery.
