THE VOICE OF POLYPOID VOCAL CORDS BEFORE AND AFTER SURGERY

Speakers voice is a carrier of important linguistic, paralinguistic and organic information in the process of speech communication. In the present investigation the voice quality of the polypoid vocal cords before and after surgery was estimated and its acoustical characteristics were measured. The clinical part of the investigation was carried out in the University Clinics “Sestara milosrdnica” in Zagreb (Croatia). Sample of subjects consisted of 30 subjects (15 males and 15 females) who were examined in the voice clinic because of the breathy voice and the polyp of one vocal cord was diagnosed. In the diagnosis procedure the laryngostroboscopy was made. The surgery was made under the general endotracheal anesthesia by means of conventional phonosurgery and laryngomicroscopy. The subjects recorded a short story and phonation of isolated vowels in laboratory conditions before the surgery and two weeks and one month after. The influence of the medical variables on the acoustical characteristics of the voice and on the subjective estimation of the voice quality was investigated. Three groups of variables were: 1. medical ones (the size of the polyp, the distance of the polyp from the front commisure and the width of the polyp grasp and the vocal cord), 2. acoustical variables were obtained by means of Multi-Dimentional Voice Program 5105 (shimmer, jitter, fundamental frequency, phonation time) and AS program (long-term average spectrum). 3. the voice quality variables consisting of several parameters were estimated by experts on seven graded scale. The results of comparison show significant improvement of the voice quality after the surgery.
