Hailpad data analysis for the continental part of Croatia

Located at the mid-latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, Croatia is exposed to frequent occurrence of severe thunderstorms and hail, especially in its continental part. In the 1960s, with the aim of reducing the risk of damage in agricultural production, a hail suppression system was introduced in this area. In order to obtain objective and precise hailstone measurements for different research studies, hailpads were installed on the main meteorological and hail suppression stations in 2001. The dense hailpad network, the so–called polygon, was established before the hailfall season in 2002 in the western continental part of Croatia. This paper presents an analysis of all hailpad data collected in 2002–2008 period, for the continental part of Croatia and separately for the hailpad polygon. To facilitate the comparison with similar analyses in other countries, the Torro hailstorm intensity scale (H0 - H10) is used for hail intensity (kinetic energy) distribution. Most of the hailfall cases in the continental part of Croatia were classified at the H0 level (weakest) and only three hail cases (0.1 %) at intensity scale H5 and with the maximum hailstone size between 31.3–35.4 mm are recorded. The results also show an upward trend of hail intensity over seven years. Spatially the hail intensity is strongly related the orography of the region.
