Old Galenics versus new: dermatotherapy in Croatian archival sources
Libraries and archives in Croatia contain various texts on medicine and pharmacy mostly written in Latin but also in Croatian type of Glagolitic alphabet. Based on such sources, recent studies identified therapeutical procedures which could be grouped into local applications (i) exclusively for skin diseases (ii) for ocular diseases and toothache, (iii) for internal diseases (e.g. urolithiasis, dysentery), (iv) wounds and cuts. Analysed old galenics are mostly of mineral origin such as :sulphur, alaun , lime, arsenic trisulphide (auripigmentum), in addition then, healing plants, or olive oil and animal fat were administered. Although there is a clear shift of pharmaceutical interest from botanical components through the centuries to chemical compounds of todays applications, dermatotherapy keep its prominent position and recent approaches of local immunotherapy promise far more.
