Spectroscopy of cold plasmas during treatment of polymers under laser irradiation

Low temperature inductively coupled RF plasmas are very important in modification and processing of various materials and the functionalization of their surfaces [1, 2]. In this work we used hydrogen, argon and oxygen plasmas to modify properties of various polymers (LDPE, HDPE, PS, PET). Low pressure (20 – 100 Pa) plasma was created by an 8 turn coil with an EM field oscillating at 13.56 MHz and discharge powers of 100 to 270 W were used. Monitoring of plasma parameters was achieved by means of optical emission spectroscopy (OES). For OES measurements CCD spectrometers were used in the spectral range from 200 to 980 nm (LIBS2000+ and Avantes AvaSpec 3648 with nominal spectral resolution of 0.1 nm and of 0.8 nm, respectively) because they offer the possibility of real time collection of spectra [3]. OES measurements were both spatially and temporally resolved. Surface temperature of the polymer samples was monitored by an infrared sensor MI from Cole-Palmer with spectral response from 8 to 14 μm and D/S ratio 10:1. Various plasmas lead to the rise in temperature of the polymer samples during treatment and different temperature profiles were observed. These profiles were related to plasma spectroscopic features and their temporal evolution. Further studies include additional treatment of polymers by nanosecond pulsed lasers in order to influence plasma conditions and improve surface processing.
