Hyperpneumatization of the skull bones

Introduction. According to the literature data, hyperpneumatization of the temporal bone is a rare, mostly unilaterally located phenomenon. During preparation of the human skull for medical student's anatomy course, several anatomical variations were found. Material and methods. The maceration technique was applied on the head of a female cadaver (age 57). Anthropometric measurements, illumination and X-ray computed tomography scans, were used to estimate three-dimensional parameters of the skull anatomy. Results. According to anthropometric criterion the skull was classified as brachycephalic (cranial (cephalic) index = 83.28) and hypereuriprosopic (total facial (prosopic) index = 76.56). The length of the styloid processes amounted 10.5 mm on the left side and 9 mm on the right side. Sutura metopica (seu frontalis) extends from the nasion to the bregma, and divides the frontal bone into symmetrical halves. Compared to the right halve, the left halve of the scull is pneumatized in greater extent. The largest areas of the pneumatization were localized in the maxillar and the ethmoidal sinuses. Extensive pneumatization of the temporal bone is presented bilaterally, located in the: mastoid process, squamous part of the temporal bone, root of the zygomatic arch and pyramid. The cortical thickness was measured on the mastoid process. On the lowest part of the mastoid process the cortical bone was the thinnest (0.20 cm). Conclusions. Pneumatization of the pyramid as well as the zygomatic process is a rare condition. Along with extensive pneumatization of the maxillar and ethmoidal synuses it is indicative for hyperpneumatization of the scull.
