Biowashball - an alternative to detergents?
Investigations of novel washing agents are interesting from the technological and environmental points of view. The research is focused on the washing performance of Biowashball® at 40 °C as an alternative to commercial detergents. The comparison in primary washing effect is obtained applying naturally soiled cotton fabrics and coloured cotton and PES/cotton fabrics. The evaluation of primary effects was done by spectral characteristics of washed samples compared to unwashed ones. Secondary effects are evaluated using a reference cotton fabric washed through 25 cycles in a washing machine. The obtained effects are studied after 1, 3, 10 and 25 cycles applying the following control criteria: ash content, decrease in breaking strength and whiteness quality of washed samples are compared to the unwashed ones. Good multiple washing performance of the Biowashball® is confirmed through less ash content as well as low level of mechanical damage. The whiteness degree is not improved, as there are no bleaches or fluorescent components contained. Nevertheless, washing with Biowashball® allows choice of “green formulation” on the market.
