The anion recognition by adamantane-dipyrromethane receptors
In recent years, a considerable interest has been focused on designing new selective anion receptors for different applications in sensing, extraction or phase-transfer catalysis.1 However, there is a continuing challenge to design new selective receptors for detection, transport or extraction of anionic species. The on-going project in our laboratory on adamantane-dipyrromethane anion receptors2 envisaged new host molecules in which hydrogen at the position five of the pyrrole ring is replaced by an aryl moiety bearing different substituent in the ortho-position. Herein we report the synthesis of new adamantane-dipyrromethane (AD) derivatives 1 - 8 and the studies of their anion binding properties. In order to investigate the influence of the geometry of the anion on the stability constant of the AD complexes, the binding studies were performed with three spherical halogenides (F-, Cl- and Br-), two oxo-anions with tetrahedral geometry (HSO4- and H2PO4-)and two planar anions (AcO- and NO3-). The affinity of binding was studied by UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. For all studied receptors the most stable complexes were found for F-, AcO- and H2PO4 -. The affinities for binding AcO- are similar for all receptors, while there is a difference for halogenides and for H2PO4-, depending on the receptor used. The association constants for binding spherical halogen anions (F-, Cl- and Br-), are higher with receptors 2, 4, 6, and 8, while the association constants for binding tetrahedral anion H2PO4- are higher with receptors 1, 3, 5, and 7.
