Effects of the cross-wind gust strength on vehicle aerodynamics
Effects of cross-wind gusts on a vehicle were experimentally investigated in the NatHaz Lab at the University of Notre Dame. Increasing wind gust strength results in nearly linear increase in steady aerodynamic loads, i.e. side force, lift force, and overturning moment. Vortex shedding from the bridge and wind gusting determine transient aerodynamic loads on a vehicle. For the side force, the predominant unsteady flow mechanism is vortex shedding. The lift force and the overturning moment are simultaneously influenced by vortex shedding and by wind gusting. With increasing the gusts’ strength, the unsteady component of the lift force and of the overturning moment becomes predominantly influenced by the gusting of the oncoming wind and the vortex shedding effects become less important.
