Engineering Education and Social Responsibility: A Qualitative Study of Non-technical Electiveness
The engineering profession has reached a "turning point" when it comes to its identity and purpose. Notions such as "soft-skills", communication, creativity, and social relevance, have been purported as some of the desirable, if not crucial elements that constitute the contemporary, or the "New Engineer". This paper deals with the extent in which the broad issues of social awareness and social responsibility are implemented in the engineering academic curriculum via non- technical electives. The research aims to shed some light on the success of this implementation through a qualitative study of students’ practices when it comes to choosing non-technical subjects.
