Iris cengialti Ambr. in Slovenia – morphological and karyological analyses

Morphological investigations of the Alpine-Dinaric populations of the series Pallidae (A. Kern) Trinajstić, Genus Iris L., has shown the presence of four separated groups, to which a separate taxonomic status can be ascribed. That corresponds to opinion that there are four species in series: I. pallida Lam., I cengialti Ambr., I. illyrica Tomm. and I. pseudopallida Trinajstić. We present the results of comparative morphological and cytological investigations of Alpine species I. cengialti, with accent on the Slovenian populations named I. cengialti Ambr. subsp. vochinensis (Paulin) Trinajstić. Two populations from Slovenia and one from Italy and herbarium specimens from Herbaria in Ljubljana and Zagreb were investigated. The morphological (dimensions and comparative morphology) and karyological (mitotic chromosomes from root - tips) features were examined. Within species I cengialti the interpopulation variability was established - Italian and Slovenian populations can be distinguished both with morphological and karyological features. Slovenian plants are taller and have two pairs of satellite chromosomes. Italian plants are lower, with three pairs of satellite chromosomes. Results contributes to the opinion about taxonomical range of Slovenian dryskinned irises as a separate subspecies. Similarity in the shape of karyograms between investigated populations and the other populations of the series Pallidae, point at their relationship and at unfinished process of speciation within series.
