Relation of visual functions and functional vision in children with low vision
Visual functions describe how does eyes and the basic visual system function. They are often measured quantitatively. Tests of Visual Functions determine threshold performance in a controlled environment, where in one test only a single parameter is varied. Functional vision describes how the person functions - that involves measures of a person’s visual skills as well as abilities applied to the performance of the usual tasks of daily life. It is often described qualitatively, although some quantitative measures are available. Functional vision depends on visual functions. Despite that, some low vision children we assessed had good visual functioning, and poor visual functions. Goal of this research is to determent influence of visual functions on functional vision in low vision children 3 to 28 months of age. Results have shown that contrast sensitivity influence the performance of different visual tasks. On the contrary visual acuity had almost no impact on functional vision. There is a need for further research of visual functions and functional vision relation, which would emphasize possibility of good visual functioning in children with severe low vision.
